Dream Machines 2017-18

Postby WilBury » Fri Oct 13, 2017 4:03 pm

How about a thread about building new machines? Anyone with thoughts about current generation stuff like boards, processors, cards, power & cooling & all the rest, or next gen stuff we might want to wait for is invited to share their wisdom.

This is my current rig in $CAD built back in 2008 when I was still getting nice fat paychecks every 2 weeks.

$ 274.42 Case Coolermaster Cosmos S will outlive me
$ 352.99 Mobo Asus Rampage Formula all the bells & whistles, dual gigabit LAN!
$ 229.49 CPU Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16 Mhz OC'd to 3.8 Mhz or better but couldn't make 4.4
$ 262.69 Memory G.SKILL 8GB (4 x 2GB) DDR2 1100 just works
$ 114.99 PSU PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750 Quad couple poor molex connectors but dual-card-ready
$1084.95 Video SAPPHIRE ATOMIC HD 4870 X2 2G GDDR5 Finally died this spring. I figure I had the fastest single-slot card in Canada for about 2 weeks & it still hangs to the side by strings watercooling the CPU!
$ 349.00 New Video SAPPHIRE NITRO R9 380 factory OC'd, air-cooled
$ 379.99 Monitor LG 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor (L226WA) meh, had to recap its power board, I like the format
$ 146.79 HDD WD Caviar Black WD1001FALS 1TB SATA 3 solid
$ 150.00? " 2 x Seagate ST3500320AS in Raid 0 solid, but poor molex power connectors made raid drop out
sometimes
Total - $ 3,000.00 + peripherals ( 11 fans, Nostromo, gaming mouse, headset, etc....OUCH!)
Expensive, but 9 years out of a gaming system ain't bad!

OK, CPU is my main bottleneck so I need mobo, memory, cpu (& a way to cool it), and some faster, bigger storage.

Good idea. I need to upgrade badly as well....

Case CoolerMaster Centurion 5 II

Mobo Asrock A780 FullHD
(old, slow, SATAII ports are actually too slow to handle the SSD at full speed... :kez1: )

CPU AMD Phenom II 940 BE quad-core (3.0 GHz) - overclocked to 3,5 GHz
(This bad boy is a work horse! Old but fast! High TDP though.

RAM ADATA 8GB DDR2

GPU Sapphire HD Radeon HD 5770 - overclocked to GPU 910 MHz / MEM 1300 MHz.
An oldie but I can play BO on high and BF4 on medium. Still need to be replaced of course!

PSU 450W, forgot the name but nothing special.

SDD Samsung 830 250 GB.
(Rock solid!)

HDD 2x 1GB Western Digital Black.

Cooling:
case: 6x CoolerMaster 120mm blue LED fans
    CPU: CoolerMaster Hyper TX3
    RAM: Corsair Dominator Airflow
I know, overkill :gamer:

Misc: Scythe Kaze Master Ace Black 5.25inch Fan Controller (+ 4x temp monitor).

Primary monitor: 27" Samsung SyncMaster S27B350

Secondary: 20"Philips 200WS8

See! Old as fuck but still does the trick without any problems. Pretty sure CoD WWII will be a problem though...

If I'm building something new it will be AMD CPU, GPU and mobo chipset. Better bang for buck. Need to convince the financial committee though.... right, Hog? :tease: :ummmm:
Punxsutawney Phil is coming for you! :pewpew:

LOL, I too have a Scythe controller. The Kama Meter model. Pity it isn't programable tho. Then it might be more useful. & the damn fan speed knob isn't linear, you have to crank it like 20 times!

I see you like Sapphire too, they've treated me well.

Drooling all over your nice SyncMaster... :ok:

I think you're definitely gonna need mo' powa. :training:

That's awesome! You can check out the AMD stuff, & I'll do the homework on Intel, OK? :read:

My computer was a Dell xps 420 Oh 420 imagine that :laugh2: It has some sort of processor and had a gtx 540 i think. It did the job but now it's a pile of rubble in the corner. Using a dell inspiron 15 3000 series laptop for now.

Here's what I figure about a new Intel build.

https://en.wikichip.org/wiki/intel/microarchitectures/coffee_lake

Socket
As of Oct 05, there's a new type of Intel Socket 1151 for the new Gen 8 Coffee Lake CPU's. They changed the pinout, so it's NOT backwards compatible with ANY older CPU's, but it does deliver more wattage for new ones. No guarantees this socket will work with Gen 9 Ice Lake CPU's in Q3 2018.

Chipset
Coffee Lake CPU's require the new Z370-series chipset.
Rumour has it the Z390 chipset out Q2 next year is the one to get cause maybe, just maybe, it'll support Gen 9 Ice Lake CPU's (& PCIe-4 I bet).
Seems you want as many PCIe lanes provided by the chipset as you can get.

CPU
Got to get at least an i5 to get the 6 cores & an i7 to get the 12 threads. K is for the ability to overclock.
https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&N=100007671%20601301612%20601301611

Memory
Dual Channel DDR4 2200 or faster, 64GB max. ETA for DDR5 is 2020.

PCIe-4
New standard just released.
https://www.extremetech.com/computing/2 ... y-released
64 GB/s (x16 duplex) @ 16 Ghz doubles the current bandwidth & speed of PCIe-3.
All the BS about "this slot not available when that slot is being used" should disappear with PCIe-4.
New laptops can use external GPU's.
Motherboards with it not out till maybe early next year.
AMD might include it in Ryzen+ or Ryzen 2.
PCIe-5 due in 2020.

10 GB/s LAN on some new motherboards. I like dual LAN.

M.2
Ultra? Key M? Key whatever? All I know is I want them all so I can plug in all those other expensive gadgets. :gamer: And none of this lip about some SATA ports being disabled when you do! :mafia:

Z370 Motherboards, meh
ATX
https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007627%20601303737%20600009016&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=PRICED&PageSize=36
Extended ATX
https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007627%20601303737%20600009018&IsNodeId=1&bop=And&Order=PRICED&PageSize=36

Storage
Not even gonna look yet. I want at least 500GB of fast stuff & a few TB of disk.

Conclusion?
PCIe-4 looks to be important, not necessarily for the speed, but for the extra lanes freed up for onboard devices & interfaces. It's the deal-breaker for me so I'm waiting for that. I like to be able to have things plugged into all my sockets if I want. I can't believe I just said that?!? :ummmm:
The fact that Gen 8 Coffee Lake CPU's AND motherboard chipsets are likely to be obsolete by the end of next year or sooner doesn't inspire me either.
I probably wouldn't mind running a nice cheap top-of-the-line Coffee Lake CPU on an Ice Lake motherboard in a year if they let us by keeping the new socket. 6 cores is likely enough for me.

If you have a more recent machine, I would be happy to look into the upgrade options for you if you need help.
In the meantime, I guess I'll get back to overclocking the bejeezus out of my old rig ! :ugeek: :bossman: :beg:
